What Level is Right for My Child?

We have 4 levels of reading and math support:
EMERGENT (suggested for ages 2-5)
EARLY (suggested for ages 5-7)
EXPERIENCED (suggested for ages 6-8)
FLUENT (suggested for ages 8-10)
EMERGENT LEVEL (suggested for ages 2-5) This level creates the building blocks and sets up the foundation for your child to learn to read. The fundamental skills learned in the Emergent Level will carry your child through the rest of our reading program and beyond as a confident and critical reader.
It’s for kids who:
know less than half of the alphabet
know less than 10 consonants (MSTB/RNPG/HCDJ are good ones to test;)
know less than 10 pre-k/kinder high frequency words (I, a, go, and, what, but, to, so, be, is are good ones to test;)
aren’t yet pointing to the words in a sentence when ead to
aren’t yet blending sounds together to read actual words
By the end of our Emergent Reading Program, your child will learn how to:
master the whole alphabet
identify and write their consonants and short vowels
recognize most of the 92 pre-k/kinder high frequency words
read at least 10 of our Emergent Level picture books with minimal help
EARLY LEVEL (suggested for ages 5-7) This level builds on the skills learned in our Emergent Level Reading Program.
It’s for kids who:
have mastered the whole alphabet
can identify and write all their consonants and short vowels
are familiar with most of the 92 pre-k/kinder high frequency words
can point to the words in a sentence when reading or being read to
can read at least 10 of our 18 Emergent Level picture books with minimal help
can blend sounds together to read 3 letter short vowel words (cat, cot, cut)
By the end of our Early Reading Program, your child will learn how to:
read and write short vowel words (with beginning blend patterns)
read and write long vowel words (with beginning blend patterns)
recognize 40 1st Grade high frequency words
write a simple sentence (incorporating high frequency words and vowel patterns) with correct capitalization and punctuation
read at least 12 of our 24 Early Level books with minimal help
identify and write the main elements of a fictional story (setting, characters, problem, solution)
answer explicit reading comprehension questions, orally and in writing
EXPERIENCED LEVEL (suggested for ages 6-8) This level builds on the skills learned in our Early Level Reading Program.
It’s for kids who can:
read and write short vowel words (with beginning blend patterns)
read and write long vowel words (with beginning blend patterns)
recognize the (40) 1st Grade high frequency words
write a simple sentence (incorporating high frequency words and vowel patterns) with correct capitalization and punctuation
read at least 12 of our 24 Early Level books with minimal help
identify and write the main elements of a fictional story (setting, characters, problem, solution)
answer explicit reading comprehension questions, orally and in writing
By the end of our Experienced Reading Program, your child will learn how to:
read and write words with complex vowel and diphthong patterns
recognize the (46) 2nd Grade high frequency words
understand the difference between writing styles (narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive)
write a well developed paragraph (topic, supporting & concluding sentences) in all 4 styles
edit a well developed paragraph (intent, content, punctuation, spelling) in all 4 styles
read all 24 of our Experienced Level books with minimal help
identify and write the main elements of both fiction and non-fiction material
answer both explicit and implicit reading comprehension questions, orally and in writing
FLUENT LEVEL (suggested for ages 8-10) This level builds on the skills learned in our Experienced Level Reading Program.
It’s for kids who can:
read and write words with complex vowel and diphthong patterns
recognize the (46) 2nd Grade high frequency words
understand the difference between writing styles (narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive)
write a well developed paragraph (topic, supporting & concluding sentences) in all 4 styles
edit a well developed paragraph (intent, content, punctuation, spelling) in all 4 styles
read all 24 of our Experienced Level books with minimal help
identify and write the main elements of both fiction and non-fiction material
answer both explicit and implicit reading comprehension questions, orally and in writing
By the end of our Fluent Reading Program, your child will learn how to:
read and write compound and complex sentences, including correct grammar (contractions, compound words, homophones/homographs, prefixes/suffixes, synonyms/antonyms)
read and write compound and complex sentences, including correct parts of speech (subject-verb agreement, plurals/possessives, irregular verbs, tenses, conjunctions)
read and write compound and complex sentences, including correct figurative language (similes, metaphors, idioms, oxymorons)
recognize the (41) 3nd Grade high frequency words
further understand the difference between writing styles (narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive)
write 3 well developed paragraphs (hook, topic, supporting & concluding sentences) in all 4 styles
edit 3 well developed paragraphs (intent, content, punctuation, spelling, transitions, flow) in all 4 styles
read all 12 of our Fluent Level books with minimal help
identify and write the main elements of more complex fiction and non-fiction material
answer higher level explicit and implicit reading comprehension questions, orally and in writing
